چکیده

We report quantitative dissociation yields for the reaction CH3OH (vOH) → nhn CH31OH induced by infrared multiphoton excitation of methanol pre-excited to various levels of the OH stretching vibration (vOH50, 1, 3, 5). The yields are measured by detecting OH using laser induced fluorescence. It is demonstrated that for low levels of pre-excitation (vOH50, 1, 3) there is a substantial nonlinear intensity dependence, as a higher yield is found for self mode-locked CO2 laser pulses ~with higher peak intensity! as compared to single mode pulses of the same laser fluence, but lower peak intensity. In contrast, at high levels of preexcitation (vOH55) this nonlinear intensity dependence is absent. Quantitative model calculations are carried out using a case B/case C master equation approach that takes nonlinear intensity dependence into account. The calculations are consistent with the experimental results and confirm the prediction that an important part of the selectivity of the CO2 laser excitation step in infrared laser assisted photofragment spectroscopy of CH3OH is due to this nonlinear intensity dependence. We discuss further consequences of these experimental observations and theoretical predictions, which are also extended to infrared multiphoton excitation of C2H5OH. Infrared ~C–O! chromophore band strengths are reported for CH3OH and C2H5OH. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1501280#

Near-infrared→visible light upconversion in a molecular trinuclear d-f-d complex.

Molecular nonlinear-optical (NLO) phenomena are currently being exploited for the design of visible emitting bioprobes with unprecedented properties that result from 1) the transparency of living tissues toward low-energy near-infrared (NIR) incident radiation and 2) the improved focusing of the light from an excitation laser beam within nanometric volumes. Nonresonant multiphoton absorption pr...

Frequency-upconverted stimulated emission by simultaneous five-photon absorption

Since the invention of the laser in 1960, multiphoton effects have become useful in techniques for real applications as well as conceptual predictions. Here, we report the first experimental observation of frequency-upconverted stimulated emission from a novel fluorophore through simultaneous five-photon absorption. Compared to lower-order nonlinear absorption, the fifth-order dependence on inp...

Investigation on cellular uptake of gold nanoparticles by multiphoton laser scanning microscopy

Multiphoton absorption induced luminescence (MAIL), as a nonlinear optical feature of noble metallic nanoparticles has shown great advantages in the in situ detection of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). Selection of excitation wavelengths to yield high efficient MAIL signal from different sized AuNPs is of great significance, but a systematical study of this aspect is still lacking so far. In this c...

Upconversion luminescence of an insulator involving a band to band multiphoton excitation process.

A multiphoton process to the conduction band of the insulator Er2O3 is reported, which occurs in vacuum under near infrared excitation. The enormous upconversion intensity is two orders of magnitude greater than that in air, and also the intensity ratio for green and red emission bands is inverted. The mechanism is probed by experiments of laser power dependence, cathodoluminescence, photocondu...
